Black Owned Fashion Brand That You Need To Know About: Kilentar

Happy Tuesday fashion lovers, I hope that all of you are doing well and had a great weekend. Let us all work hard so that we can enjoy the weekend.

I know that Monroe Steele is getting tired of mentioning her name, but she has put me on to some amazing fashion brands, including Kilentar. I was watching her six fashion brands that you need to know about in 2024 and she mentioned this brand. Kìléntár is a fashion brand launched by British-Nigerian Designer Michelle Adepoju, which aims to showcase and celebrate the feminine elegance and fierceness that is deeply rooted in African history. The brand creates timeless designs that not only reflect the rich cultural heritage of Africa but also embrace modern fashion aesthetics.

Drawing inspiration from elements from various periods and cultures across Africa, Kìléntár bridges the gap between traditional African designs and contemporary fashion. Working closely with skilled weavers, dyers, and other skilled hands, Kìléntár promotes artisanal excellence with designs reflective of forgotten histories. From Nigeria to Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and beyond, Kìléntár channels generations of African techniques such as traditional dyeing and weaving methods to create one-of-a-kind garments displaying modern femininity, to ensure that our African traditional craft and heritage lives on. Kìléntár has been recognized by publications such as Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, CNN, The Cut, and many more.

Born and raised in the United Kingdom, Michelle Adepoju grew up with Nigerian parents who cherished their traditions and instilled a deep connection to her rich Yoruba culture. After graduating, she embarked on a journey that led her to Nigeria, where she immersed herself in the diverse cultures of West African countries like Burkina Faso, Togo, Senegal, and Ivory Coast. During her travels, Michelle was deeply inspired by the passion and mastery of artisans, who had inherited their craftsmanship through generations.

In 2019, fuelled by her experiences and wanderlust, she founded the Kìléntár brand, which was officially established in 2020. It's a tribute to the artistry of these skilled craftsmen, reimagining their work through modern design. Michelle's mission is to celebrate the elegant and feminine silhouette, inviting people on a unique journey through West Africa via the world of fashion.

The Layo dress is made from a wool fabric, with fringe detailing made from stove wool, the Layo dress showcases a graceful sense of movement that can be worn for multiple occasions. The Layo Dress was also featured in the January/February issue of Essence when Tracee Ellis Ross wore it. This dress is priced at $906.00.

Let your inner Mermaid shine in the Mami Dress, The Mami dress captures the ethereal essence of the supernatural world, drawing inspiration from the mesmerizing qualities of water and the enigmatic creatures that reside within it. Made from lightweight chiffon fabric, and beaded with gold this dress features a captivating print that evokes the mysterious aura of the deep waters. One of the key sources of inspiration for the Mami dress is the legendary figure of "mami watta" or "mermaid." This mythical creature represents the untamed power and beauty that lies beneath the surface of the water. The dress gives a glimpse into the enchanting world of these creatures and allows you to embrace their supernatural essence. The Mami Dress is $841.00.
