AAPI Fashion Designer That You Need To Know About: Guo Pei.

Greetings, fellow fashion enthusiasts on this Tuesday. I hope everyone is doing well, had a wonderful weekend, and is having a productive workweek.

I saw one of my favorite fashion icons, Rihanna, wearing a stunning creation by Chinese haute couture designer Guo Pei at the Met Gala, which is my Super Bowl. Sincerely, I've been meaning to share this designer with you all, but I completely forgot about it. I therefore thought that you guys should join the bandwagon today.

Guo Pei is China's most renowned fashion designer and the country's first couturier. She has been committed to her design philosophy of "Eastern learning as root, Western learning as application" for more than 30 years, skillfully fusing Chinese heritage with international couture traditions. When Guo Pei was two years old, she attempted to assist her mother in threading a needle, which sparked her interest in sewing. The embroidery on her grandmother's wedding gown had a profound effect on her as a child. A lifelong passion for creating beauty with fabric and pattern was ignited by that early encounter.

Guo Pei spent ten years designing for a well-known ready-to-wear company in Beijing after graduating first in her class from one of China's first fashion schools. In 1997, she started Rose Studio, a couture atelier, and then GUO PEI, a label. Guo Pei is most proud of the Rose Studio Team. She personally selected and trained nearly every artisan, from patternmakers to embroiderers. Together, they have transcended traditional methods to create a new couture language that is the height of contemporary artistry. Her designs, which had their roots in Chinese art and were influenced by a variety of international cultures, quickly gained recognition for combining traditional craftsmanship, striking silhouettes, and creative innovation.

Guo Pei is one of the most often invited Chinese artists on the international scene, with exhibitions in more than 25 countries. "National and ethnic culture flows through us, shapes us, and becomes our truest form of expression," she frequently says. It speaks for us with depth, emotion, and clarity wherever we go. Over the past ten years, Guo Pei has stunned runway audiences from Beijing to Paris. From 2015 to 2020, she presented ten consecutive couture collections in Paris as the first and only Chinese couturier invited by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM) and featured on the official Haute Couture Week calendar for five years. Additionally, the Asian Couture Federation (ACF) has recognized her as an Asian Couturier Extraordinaire.

Guo Pei received an invitation to address the UN General Assembly. In addition to hosting the F4D First Lady Charity Luncheon, she discussed the importance of the creative idea of "Harmony between men and nature" in fashion design. For the 2015 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Guo Pei dressed international celebrity Rihanna in a golden-yellow couture gown with a five-meter train. It turned into the year's most talked-about dress and the most popular photo on social media. Guo Pei was named one of the "TIME 100 Most Influential People in the World" in 2016.

In 2017, the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film invited her to present Guo Pei: Couture Beyond, a historic retrospective of her 30-year creative career, which was her first worldwide solo exhibition. Guo Pei's first partnership with a Chinese fashion designer was with Sotheby's in 2019. This included a show called "GOLD: The Midas Touch" that was held in both New York and London.

In order to reimagine Chinese porcelain for future generations, Guo Pei and Guangcai master Tan Guanghui collaborated to create Glazed Splendor in 2025. The project was commissioned by UBS and the K11 Craft & Guild Foundation, and it was showcased at Art Basel Hong Kong. In order to highlight the allure of Chinese culture through her artistic creations, Guo Pei has been invited to and worked with some of the world's most prestigious museums and cultural institutions over the past ten years and beyond. These include the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris, the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion in Atlanta, the Asian Civilizations Museum in Singapore, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Auckland Art Gallery, and the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac.

This gorgeous piece is from her Paradise Haute Couture Collection for Spring/Summer 2018.
