Hello again fellow fashion lovers, I hope that all of you are doing well and had an amazing weekend. I can't believe that we're in December and the new year is only a few days away, and to be honest, I'm looking forward to 2025.
I was reading the August issue of Elle Magazine and I saw four new fashion designers that I was intrigued by their designs, so I figured that it was my responsibility to be a good friend to tell you lovely people about them so maybe you can you find a new designer to fall in love with.
I saw a piece from Colleen Allen in Spring/Summer 2025 on the Vogue website and I thought to myself, This dress would look great on Tilda Swinton, Colleen Allen is clothing as a spiritual moment of transformation. It explores refined tailoring and has an affinity for unconventional material, the pieces create subtle acts of subversion, offering a distinct perspective of femininity. Formerly of The Row and Calvin Klein. All of her pieces are designed and made in New York City.
Paolo Carzara's designs are incredible with a sustainable twist, Paolo Carzana is the Welsh designer behind the namesake label Paolo Carzana. Working with plant-based, recycled, organic, and repurposed materials, natural dyes, and handmade construction, Carzana’s garments explore the tensions between strength and fragility. Most recently, Carzana has been shortlisted for the LVMH Prize, as a 2024 finalist (to be held in September 2024) with his AW24 collection Melanchronic Mountain presented at the LVMH Prize semi-final showroom in March 2024. This dress is from the Spring/Summer 2024 Ready-To-Wear Collection.
The last two designers I featured on my Fashion Friday, and I love seeing their collections. Duran Lantink is a fashion label based in Amsterdam and Paris known for its ever-evolving, conscious collections. In a process that fuses pre-loved pieces, deadstock, and new sustainable materials, garments can transform with the zeitgeist. Upon acquiring, the wearer can gain entry into a series of edits to maintain its relevance. This continuous dialogue between designer and owner makes each creation inherently timeless and one-of-a-kind. Technology plays a pivotal role in how the brand reflects on the environmental and social issues of today. Its ssaw2021 digital fashion show was filmed and attended solely by drones; garnering critical praise for its striking commentary on access and excess in the fashion industry. Most recently, the brand made its Paris Fashion Week debut with the presentation of the ssaw2023 collection, featuring 39 looks brought to life through merging bespoke three-dimensional sculpting techniques with traditional handiwork. Lauded by press such as UK Vogue, US Vogue, Dazed, i-D, Paper Magazine, and others, Duran Lantink has also caught the eye of cultural icons, having designed custom pieces for the likes of Beyonce, Billie Eilish, City Girls, Doja Cat, Lizzo, Grimes, Janelle Monae, and Solange. Exclusive looks and collections have been sold in prominent retailers such as H. Lorenzo Los Angeles, JOYCE Hong Kong, Concrete Amsterdam, and Browns London. In 2023, Duran Lantink won the Andam Special Prize 2023. Now he is a finalist for the LVMH price of 2024. World-renowned institutions such as Met Costume Institute, Victoria & Albert Museum, and Stedelijk Museum have acquired work for their permanent collections.
This piece is from his Fall/Winter 2024 Ready-To-Wear Collection.
And finally, Tolu Coker is a British-Nigerian Fashion Designer and Multi-Disciplinary Artist based in London. A graduate of Central Saint Martins’ BA in fashion design and textile print program, Coker launched her eponymous fashion brand in 2021, following several successful stints at J W Anderson, Celine, and Maison Margiela, and has since used it as a vehicle for creating equity and social change. Inspired by the politics of identity and social climates, Coker’s collections, films, and artworks are informed by her multi-disciplinary practice, and merge artisan craftsmanship with innovative technology to explore hybridity and fluidity in societies and cultures. Her mainly unisex designs have a key focus on deconstruction and sustainability, championing ethical and inclusive ways of designing and manufacturing, whilst using clothing as a means of having important conversations. Coker’s radical approach to widening inclusivity and participation within fashion and the creative arts has seen her partner with institutions and charities across the globe to empower communities internationally, including Choose Love, Amnesty International, and The City of Joy. In 2022, the designer partnered with WeTransfer on their biggest creative global campaign to date and L’oreal Professionnel on their largest global hair and education show. Coker continues to create collections in alignment with social causes she is passionate about. Coker’s unique multi-disciplinary approach to fashion and design is pioneering in both its style and social impact. Whilst boasting a global client base and high-profile supporters, Coker has racked up an impressive array of awards and honors including being one of five cover stars on the January 2024 'Sustainability Trailblazer' Cover of British Vogue, The British Fashion Council NEWGEN Award 2023-2024, Forbes 30 under 30 list (2022), Prada x Theaster Gate Experimental Design Lab Award(2022/3) and 2023-2024 Net A Porter Vanguard Programme.
